US President-elect Donald Trump's choice of Steve Bannon as his chief strategist sent a shudder through the Washington establishment, but delighted an online army of far-right extremists. Bannon was seen as the intellectual driver behind the campaign's decision to rail against a "global power structure" opposed to American values — a favorite theme of nationalist conspiracy-mongers. Trump's camp, however, reject any suggestion that Bannon is a bigoted extremist.
